My stories do not fit easily into most of the popular genres like mystery, sci fi or romance, though sometimes they may contain aspects of all of them. I often classify them as Magical Realism. Usually the main characters are on the spiritual path, so my writing appeals to folks who find themselves on similar journeys. It is my deepest wish that my books will touch your heart and aid you in your searching as well.
Yellow-Billed Magpie is a love story, a spiritual journey, a quest to look beyond appearances to the mystical rhythms that guide the human heart.
Unlike their black-billed cousins, yellow-billed magpies are rarely found outside California’s Central Valley. So when they begin showing up in Samantha O’Malley’s dreams, she wonders: are they calling me home?
Disappointed by failed fertility treatments and the break-up of her marriage, Samantha returns to her home town and slips into old habits, resuming her teaching career, even hooking up with an old lover. But she also renews her friendship with Craig, the school custodian she honors as her spiritual guide. The work they do together with Samantha’s special education students will lead her to discoveries she never thought possible.
Red-Tailed Hawk is a coming-of-age story, the tale of a young woman’s quest to discover the source of her own longing and to understand the mystical legacy of her family.
When Mariah Easer encounters a large hawk in her urban midtown neighborhood, her father Charlie is concerned. He can see a wild and magical path opening before his daughter, a path he himself would never be able to resist.
The hawk soon reappears: engraved with its twin on a golden thimble that has been an Easter family heirloom for generations After the thimble is stolen at a funeral reception, Mariah and her mother Samantha set off on a road trip to find it, a journey that will bring healing to the grieving family and change Mariah’s life forever.
Ghost Owl is a spiritual story of discovery that follows a young woman as she explores the limits of her potential and confronts her own shadow.
Twenty-year-old college student Mariah Easter is missing. Her mother and half-brother are frantically searching for her. Her best friend Rafa is poring through her private journals, seeking clues to her whereabouts. But Mariah is unaware of their concern. Blind to any danger, she has slipped into a world where darkness is as bright as noon—but for her eyes only. Embarking on a deep spiritual journey into shadows, she begins peering into the unlit spaces normally hidden from view, leading her to confront the sinister nature of power, the vulnerability of the ill, and the secret life of a homeless man: a winding path that will bring healing to herself and the man she loves.
A tiny collection of wild, humorous short stories, featuring Rover, the saga of Blanca and Rosanna, a modern day Snow White and Rose Red, neighbors who unwittingly share a lover. Their paramour Steve is young and ambitious–but he’s got a big secret!
Day-old loaves of bread morph into feral cats, a water goddess dresses her children in corduroy, two magical boxer dogs comfort an angry divorcee: my flash fiction is both comic and poignant, and always surreal. In my essays I aim to hit the heart of the matter, exploring the messiness of anger, grief, aging and oranges.
I’ve endeavored to fill this brief collection with gems. I hope it will touch your heart.
